Alexander County sits at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers in southern Illinois. Despite having been a Democratic bastion in years past as a major boat transportion hub (with Cairo at its heart), Trump has won it in each of his runs for the White House, doing so by 19.5 points in 2024. Kamala Harris won the Cairo area handily, but Trump's margins farther up in the county shifted it into the Republican column
SD 36 is a bar-shaped Democratic gerrymander that stretches from Rock Island and Moline along the Mississippi River to the north, down to Monmouth and Galesburg, and then Macomb in the south. Harris won the seat by 5 points, with a clear divide emerging between the district's cities and the connecting rural turf. In terms of communities of interest, there is some logic to the district, but it is still clearly a Democratic-favoring gerrymander
